Are you looking for a new challenge? Do you have an eye for detail? Our Health, Safety and Quality team is continuing to grow. We are looking for a Health & Safety Manager who cares about delivering quality outcomes as well as healthy and safe ones. 

Please note this is a remote working post and you will be attached to your nearest office as your base for HR purposes.  You will travel to DfE construction sites on a regular basis.

Introduction

The Construction Health and Safety Manager sits within the Construction Health, Safety and Quality Team of the Technical Standards Division in Capital Directorate.  The team’s overarching aims are to ensure the department fulfils its legal duties as a major construction client and delivers our projects safety to the end users.  

The Capital Directorate is a dynamic environment, delivering multi-billion-pound construction programmes. We are one of the largest public sector construction clients in England, with a capital budget of £23.5bn to 2020-21, and over 600 school building projects.  

We deliver new schools, rebuilds and refurbishments of existing schools and works to improve the condition of the whole school estate. We help provide high quality school places where they are needed and set standards for school buildings across the country. We also provide capital funding to schools and colleges so children can learn in good quality, safe buildings

Job Description

You will be responsible for inspecting our construction activity across England ensuring we meet legal, technical and quality standards for our new school buildings. Part of your role will be making sure the projects are fit for purpose, safe and cost effective to operate and maintain while providing assurances our Contractors and Designers fulfil their duties. Alongside this you will provide professional construction advice, training and support to the project, design and technical teams across our construction programmes..

You will report to the Head of Construction Health and Safety and sit within the Technical Standards Division.

Main Responsibilities

  • Inspect construction sites to monitor and improve compliance 
  • Craft relationships with our contractors and across our construction programmes. 
  • Provide health and safety support, guidance and professional expertise to our Construction Quality and Workmanship Managers and project teams to improve CDM, health, safety and quality compliance. 
  • Develop and implement our strategies to improve site management and reduce incidents and failures associated with health, safety, design, quality and workmanship weaknesses. 
  • Lead and support project teams in the investigation of accidents and incidents. 
  • Develop and deliver internal health and safety training.

Essential requirements

We are looking for someone to show they have experience of: 

  • Representing the client’s interest on capital construction programmes. 
  • Inspecting and auditing of construction sites to improve health, safety and quality. 
  • Utilising excellent communication skills 
  • Providing support and guidance to project teams 
  • Developing and implementing practices/strategies to reduce accidents, incidents and defects.

Memberships

Chartered membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) or Graduate member of IOSH (GradIOSH) with clear recent evidence of planned and organised progression towards the grade of CMIOSH.

Qualifications

NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent Evidence of construction training or NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety or equivalent
