Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right in the heart of the city and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Advisor to join our dynamic and forward-thinking team. The role will suit an experienced advisor looking to advance their career whilst working within a modern campus that is receiving significant investment. 

Reporting directly to the University’s Head of Health and Health and Safety, we are looking for a pro-active and experienced Health and Safety Advisor to support the University’s Health and Safety Department.  The successful candidates focus will be on providing competent health, safety, and welfare advice to all staff to ensure that effective health and safety management is embedded across the University. 

The Health and Safety Advisor must be keen to develop the positive safety culture across the BCU community and be someone who can take the lead in promoting occupational health, safety, and wellbeing throughout the University.

  • NEBOSH Diploma or Level 6 Equivalent
  • IOSH Membership at Graduate/Certified or above
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety legislative and best practice requirements, relevant experience in successfully implementing occupational health strategies would be an advantage.
  • Experience in developing and implementing emergency planning and business continuity strategies.
  • Experience in driving forward recommendations from Audits, Inspections, Assessments, Health Surveillance and Investigation reports.
  • A solution focus with exceptional organisational skills and the ability to manage competing demands.
  • Sound knowledge of health and safety management systems such as HS(G)65 and ISO 45001.

Our academic staff are eligible to enrol in the Teachers’ Pension, a Defined Benefit scheme that includes guaranteed benefits for life, including the option of a tax-free lump sum at retirement and life cover of three times your salary.   We recognise the value a great pension can have for our employees, and we make a 23.68% employer contribution.   Your personal monthly contributions will vary between 7.4% and 11.7%, depending on your salary. We also give all staff a 32-day annual leave allowance, in addition the 8 public and bank holiday days.

Based in the heart of England, the city is easily accessible by road, rail and air. Birmingham New Street station has recently undergone major redevelopment, while the city is at the heart of the high-speed rail network, HS2.  HS2 will provide new rapid rail travel connecting Birmingham City Centre to London and the rest of the network from the new Curzon Street Station – adjacent to Birmingham City University’s City Centre Campus – and will be one of the most environmentally friendly stations in the world.

The city’s appetite for progression is boundless, and it has been championing innovation since the earliest days of the Industrial Revolution, reflected in Birmingham City University’s new STEAMhouse building which opened in October 2022 and is home to an inter-disciplinary community of entrepreneurs, businesses, academic researchers, and students offering a wealth of support to companies of all sizes to boost growth through innovation to address commercial and societal challenges.

The city also provides a great place to shop, being home the Bullring and Grand Central, the luxurious Mailbox Birmingham and the world-famous home of British bling - the Jewellery Quarter, which is home to Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery.

From Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and the beautiful arcades and independents, to the city’s historic markets in Digbeth, the shops in Birmingham offer a plethora of choice.
