As Head of the profession of occupational health and safety in the Island, you are responsible for providing direction and leadership to deliver a safer working environment in Jersey within which risks to health and safety of workers, and others directly affected by activities, are adequately controlled. Responsibilities include but are not exclusive to the following:


  • Lead on the development of organisational policy and planning for the development of robust occupational health and safety legislation, standards and performance in the island.
  • Evaluate emerging island, national and international health and safety trends, statistics, legislation and practice to recommend proposals for the development of the strategic framework and changes to legislation or operational policies
  • Act as the principal source of expertise on occupational Health and Safety matters
  • Define and establish regulatory and enforcement policy and procedures,
  • Provide specialist advice to other Government departments on the development of strategic and operational health and safety issues for which they have lead responsibility


What we are looking for:


  • UK based candidates must hold the qualification ‘Specialist Post Graduate Diploma in Regulatory Occupational Health and Safety’, and either are or have been a Health and Safety Inspector in England, Wales, Scotland, N. Ireland or the Isle of Man. (we may even consider New Zealand and Australia)
  • CMIOSH
  • Extensive experience of working within an occupational health and safety regulatory environment
  • Demonstrable knowledge of political and policy making processes, and ability to operate at the highest level within them, to secure effective regulation and enforcement of occupational health and safety standards.
  • A comprehensive working knowledge of legal and technical policies and procedures relating to administration of criminal law, including the Enforcement policy and Collecting Witness Evidence policy
  • Strong ability to analyse and evaluate emerging trends, statistics, legislation and practice.
  • Powerful communication skills, both written and verbal, with the credibility to influence at all levels.
  • In-depth understanding of ways to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders to communicate complex and unfamiliar messages
