Grade: 8 - £34,809 - £42,585 per annum (£44,628 unconsolidated maximum achievable through performance related progression in line with appraisal process)

Situated in Zone 5, Sutton is less than 30 minutes by train from central London, and south and south west London are easily accessible by public transport. There are 10 train stations which serve key neighbourhoods within the borough providing direct connections to London Victoria, London Bridge, London Blackfriars and St Pancras International. Sutton also has direct rail connections with Epsom, Dorking, Guildford and Horsham, as well as Wimbledon for an interchange with the London Underground and West Croydon for the London Overground. There’s also an extensive road network which provides close and easy access to the M25 and M23.

About the Role

In this role you will be:

  • Providing high quality, effective and efficient Health and Safety technical support and advice services to managers and employees of Sutton Council, our partnership agencies and external customers
  • Carrying out monitoring visits at our sites and those of our customers
  • Supporting managers in incident and accident investigations
  • Undertaking policy research and review, promoting best practice
  • Providing advisory H&S consultancy services and ensuring compliance

About us

You will help deliver the council's key Health and Safety advisory and support service across the council. This role forms part of the Council's Assets and Property Team and you will be an experienced Health and Safety practitioner to assist in the delivery of auditing, investigations, training, support and guidance. You will be customer focused and be influential in the development of a positive safety culture across the organisation.

About you

You will have expert knowledge of statutory requirements, Codes of Practice and current legislation relating to Health and Safety management, with great communication skills and the ability to operate effectively at all levels. You will have strong negotiation skills and you’ll be adept in handling a varied workload, joining the Council at a really exciting time for the Borough.

You will be joining a supportive, experienced and committed team. We operate a high standard of health, safety and well-being advisory services both internally and externally to public sector organisations who purchase traded health and safety services from us.

The Council is seeking an experienced and proactive Health and Safety Consultant to assist in the delivery of auditing, training, support and guidance.

To be successful in the role of Health and Safety Consultant, you will be able to demonstrate the following key points:

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent, in Occupational Health and Safety. 
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body, minimum Technical membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) or equivalent, with a willingness to work towards graduate membership.
  • Practical or professional experience and understanding of a specialist area or supporting service teams and/or providing support to the public.
