Teaching young people to avoid unintentional injuries
Ugochi Obidiegwu, driven by a mission to prevent unintentional injuries, has created a specialised approach to educate young people globally about safety.
Recognising that technical explanations often disengage young learners, Ugochi found that using relatable, real-world examples—like sharing safety scenarios involving children—immediately captured their attention.
As the founder of The Safety Chic, Ugochi has authored a children’s safety storybook series and developed educational safety-focused digital games. Her Train Them Young Initiative aims to equip children with safety knowledge in a way that feels accessible and engaging, particularly targeting children in sub-Saharan Africa, where unintentional injury rates are highest. This initiative leverages fun, interactive methods to make safety education impactful and memorable.
Through a recent research project at a summer camp in Magboro, Nigeria, Ugochi and her team explored the effectiveness of her methods, aiming to highlight how safety education can contribute to reduced injury rates.
