Leadership insight: Nancy Leppink, chief of Labadmin/OSH in the International Labour Organization’s Governance and Tripartism Department

Leppink says a key leadership attribute is making sure you are the most prepared person in the room. Another is to have a generosity of spirit.

“Ideally [you should] make everyone feel valued,” she says. “It takes time to communicate effectively and to listen to their grievances and the positive things they have to say but it is time well invested.”

She adds that it is also important to recognise that there always more than one solution. “… Even if it’s not necessarily the one you would have selected, the engagement of others in finding and achieving it often reaps a lot of benefits in making the solution sustainable and empowering those people.”
